Ex-Jets Player Sues Jeff Sessions to Legalize Marijuana

Former Jets defensive end Marvin Washington is now tackling Attorney General Jeff Sessions — suing the head of the Department of Justice to decriminalize marijuana.

Washington is one of five plaintiffs in a new Manhattan federal lawsuit against Sessions, the DOJ and the Drug Enforcement Agency.

The suit challenges the constitutionality of the 1970 Controlled Substance Act that classifies marijuana as a dangerous substance, in the same category as heroin or LSD.

“Classifying cannabis as a ‘Schedule I drug’ is so irrational that it violates the U.S. Constitution,” the suit says. Meth and cocaine are schedule II drugs and thus considered more benign than marijuana under the law.

“The record makes clear that the CSA doesn’t make any rational sense and the federal government knows it,” said attorney Michael Hiller, who represents Washington and the other plaintiffs, including 11-year-old Alexis Bortell, who needs medical marijuana treatment for epilepsy, and disabled military veteran Jose Belen, who uses the drug to control his post-traumatic stress disorder.

Washington is suing because the CSA prevents him from obtaining federal grants to open a business that would allow pro football players to use medical marijuana for pain management in lieu of more addictive opioids.

Washington was drafted by the Jets in 1989 and won the Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos in 1998.

A DOJ spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Sessions has said that he’s “not a fan of expanded use of marijuana.”

Strain of the Week: Tru Blue Preroll

THC: 18% – 20%

Strain: Sativa

Appearance: Raw Preroll

Scent: Very rich evergreen smell straight from the package

Flavor: Light bodied smoke that gets harsher the more pulls you take

High: Uplifting high that comes on strong peaking within eight minutes lasting well over an hour. Great contemplative high good for focus

Dispensary: Metro Meds

Dispensary of the Week: Metro Meds

I have frequented Metro Meds for the last years and I have to say even though they have changed hands, service is consistently good.

Location: My favorite location in town solely because they are directly next to a Discount Tire, who is known for challenging Marijuana legalization.

New Patient Specials: By far one of the best new patient programs in town buy one get one free up to a quarter. Also, they are now under new management so check to see, you may qualify a second time.

Deals: Metro Meds has daily deals featuring a Tuesday Choose-Day where you can select your own deal from $30 eighths, $65 quarters, $100 half oz, $199 oz, 20% off concentrates/cartridges or 25% off Edibles.

Knowledgeable Staff: Don and Amanda were my budtenders the last several times I have been in and I will say they both have always been pleasant, able to answer all of my questions, and have made excellent recommendations.

Ambiance: The inside is clean and well kept however, I am looking forward to the new renovations. I believe the building was a former daycare center and can use a facelift. One of my favorite things is that they have client appreciation events on site such as Sublime and Korova with knowledgeable staff to speak to their products.

Price: My understanding is that Metro Meds is currently a wholesaler and will have their own cultivation soon. For that reason, I am hoping they can come down in price a bit to be more competitive. However, their prices are already reasonable and on the lower end of the Phoenix scale.

Selection: Overall, there is a nice selection of at least 20 strains of flower, 2 large refrigerators full of edibles from Sublime and Kordova and a rack of gummies from Baked Bros alongside a shelf of their syrups etc. In addition, you can also find topicals from 420 Skin Care.

Quality of Product: From my first recommendation of Moose-n-Lobsta and Jilly Bean to the most recent free pre-roll of Tru Blue, the recommendations by staff have always been stellar. I have always been happy with the quality of the flower and edibles I have purchased here.

Displays: Overall the dispensary is orderly, clean, and well stocked. I think they could do more to showcase the flower. One of the edible cases was empty, which was in the process of being stocked.

Safety: There is a security guard on site at all times, which makes me feel more comfortable as I frequent dispensaries on my own a lot. I have never felt uncomfortable or overcrowded at this location.

PRO TIP: Don’t forget to ask you budtender for recommendations but be sure to let them know your experience level with the medication.
